“Façana posterior de can Batiló (1904-06), projectada per n’Antoni Gaudi i Cornet.”

atop this just “Barcelona”

Thanks!
the front photograph was by (fotografia d’en) Joan A. Parés

the brand is “Tretzevents”

*** I’m trying to figure out what the picture is. It’s an eccentrically designed building – maybe a hotel or apartment complex. ***

Thanks!

  1. guiri says:

“Back view of the Batiló apartment block, a project by Antonio Gaudí”

This is a view of the back of the block of apartments built by the famous Catalan architect, Antonio Gaudi. It is known to the locals as ´La Pedrera’, the stone quarry and is on Paseig de Gracia in Barcelona.

    Guiri’s answer is right – & that’s not Spanish/Castellano it’s Català

    *— edit
Façana is català =] and it mean’s Façade
    but posterior means REAR, behind…

So rear view would be right =]

You know, the brand, and the photographer aren´t going to help you identify the building…

It is by Gaudí? Right there, you MUST know that it’s “eccentricallly designed”. That was his trademark.

And are you SURE it says façana? with an N??? Sure that wasn’t a D? Kay, I’m not all that fluent in catalán (which that is, btw, not Spanish) but I’m pretty sure that facade is spelled with a C in catalán, as well.

Still: you know what a facade, is, correct? the face of a building….it says: “BACK facade of the Casa (house) Battló (name of the family that it was built for), a project by Antoní (catalán for Anthony/Antonio) Gaudí. The i Cornet is part of is formal name. He is generally known as just Gaudí. the dates signify when the project was built. It was a privately owned home, and now is a private museum (about 17 ‘ 20€ to tour it.)

Barcelona, I should think you have figured out, is the city where this building (and most of Gaudí’s work) is.

And, I suggest, for more information, you look up these names: Gaudí, Modernisme, and Casa Batlló.

You should find the FRONT facade, which is much more famous, and, if you can see it through the trees, is intended to look like a dragon.

You should also check out some photos of the rest of Gaudí’s work, including El Templo de la Sagrada Familia (huge church, his masterpiece STILL under construction) and Casa Milá…or La Pedrera, which is supposed to look like it’s under water.
